E170 - 2014 Corolla LE, Oil and Cabin Filter Change

My buddy David asked me if we could change his oil, cabin filter, and clean up his daily driven Toyota Corolla. That way he could be corollin in a better fashion.


The Oil Change

What's needed?
  • 14mm socket
  • Socket wrench
  • Special Toyota/Lexus 67mm oil filter cap socket
  • Obviously: oil and an oil filter

Precursor Notes:
Toyota specifies 0w-20 or 5w-20 depending on conditions. We went with a 5w-20 since we are in the heat of summer right now.

So this car has an oil filter cap that is located on the underside of the car. Just behind the oil pan, on the passenger side of the motor. It is an odd looking thing that requires a special socket to get it off properly. It also has a cartridge style oil filter. Similar to zee Germans.

David always had this car serviced at the dealership for the first 100k. I'm not sure if they put it on extra tight of what but, it was a massive pain to get off. We originally got a 65/67mm Penzoil Oil Filter Removal Socket. However, it was too shallow and would not grip this "cap" correctly. It would simply rotate the socket each time.

Don't bring home this one. Pennzoil PN#19908


Instead we discovered that Pennzoil makes another Oil Filter Cap Wrench (19906) which works much better. It is plenty deep and will hold the flats of the filter cap correctly. Even with the correct socket, I had to get pneumatic impact gun out to get this cap loose. It was really on there.

What to do:
Common sense dictates you will need an oil pan of some kind. Please don't do this while the engine is hot.

Use the 14mm socket to remove the oil pan bolt.

Drain the oil out.

Put the oil pan bolt back in. Not 100% sure on the torque spec on this one. It is a steal oil pan so it is not as sensitive as an aluminum one. We used the German spec, Goot an tight!

Use a pair of needle nose pliers, to remove the retaining clip on the oil filter cap. This keeps it from backing out.

Remove the oil filter cap.

After you get that loosened the old filter cartridge should come right out.


Replace the oil filter cap seal with the new one that was provided.

Recommended tightness for the oil filter cap is 1/2 to 3/4 turns once it seats all the way.

Don't forget to snap your retaining clip back in place. Shown on the left, in the image above..

Now fill up your engine with oil. Supposedly this motor take 4.2 quarts. 5w-20 is so thin it is really hard to see on the dipstick. Keep a close eye and don't over fill it.

Reset the Oil Service Light

  • Press DISP and hold.
  • Turn Key all the forward but, don't start car. I think this is position II.
  • Let go of DISP after beeping stops.

Cabin Filter Replacement



Drop the glove box by pressing in the two tabs left and right. Basically what we are trying to do is open the glove box further so we can access the cabin filter box.

After you drop the glove box all the way down there will be an opening between the top of the glove box and the bottom of the dash. In that gap, behind it, you will see a cover that says open. Notice the arrow and the word up.

Pop off that cover remove the old cabin filter.

Slide in the new one, paying attention to the arrow on it for air flow. In our case UP went towards the windshield.

Snap the cover back on and you are good to go. Enjoy the fresh air that probably smells exactly like the air before. Perfect!

These Neuspeed race springs need some love. These came off a car that was from Florida originally. So, the elements have eaten off that factory yellow coating a bit. I rubbed the up with the wire brush for a while.
Brush on the de-ruster and let it work. You will see it fizzle for a little while. After a bit it turns in to a black paintable surface.

Things to note:
This is part 3 of this particular write up. Please see, part 1 and 2 for further details and to get caught up to this point.

Please note before you start this project, to remove the upper and lower ball joints you will need a very large C-Clamp that can be rented from the auto parts or a press. There is also a specific socket adapter kit you must also rent in order to use that C-Clamp method. Honda's have interesting front control arms that won't allow you to push that ball joint out with out. In my case, I have a 4 point 66mm impact socket that worked just fine. If not, I would have needed to rent the secondary kit that comes with the extra adapters.

The scope of this project was to replace:
Lower control arm bushings.
Lower shock mount bushings.
Tie rod ends.
Lower ball joints.
Upper ball joints.
Sway bar end links.
Upper, inner, A-arm bushings.
