GE8 – Checking the Front Brakes, Tires

Since we brought the Fit (Penny) home I wanted to give things a once over. With the initial brake issue taken care of by CarMax, I still wanted to put my eyes on the driver side caliper. When one acts funny I always like to take a look at the other.


Items needed:
I like to use anti seize in these cases. Puts a nice graphite coating on the metal, doesn't bind to the rubber. However, there are all sorts of opinions on this, bear grease, lithium grease, ect.

Tools needed:
Lug wrench of your choice (remove the lug nuts)
Socket Wrench
12mm socket (caliper bolts to slide pins)
Large Flat Head Screwdriver (spread the caliper)

What do we do:
Obviously we start by securely jacking up the front of the car. Make sure your wheels are chalked, or e-brake is on. Put the jack stands under the front driver and passenger side on the jacking tabs. Make sure the car is stabile before removing the wheels people! Remove the front wheels.



The front brakes on this one are typical  Honda, which I like. The caliper is held to the slide pins with two 12mm bolts. Once removed the caliper slides off the pads just as one would expect. I used a large flat head to spread the pads a little so the caliper would come off easily.


The brake pads have plenty of meat on them. Quite a bit dusty unfortunately. Perhaps a change in the future. The slides on the driver’s side were quite sticky so, I'm glad I took the time to inspect them.


The two dust covers pop off the back of the bracket with just a tug.


This is a good opportunity to verify there isn't anything in the slide orifice. Some brake cleaner or compressed air cane help there.



Grease up you slides good. Reinsert and check for aggressive tension against the rubber dust covers. If so, reapply lubricant until they slide smoothly.



The caliper slides back over the pads and the two 12mm bolts get torqued back down to 17ft/lbs. After a some more cleaning and a little bit of grease, we are back in order. I cleaned things up a bit while I was in there also. Brake cleaner for the win folks, just don't get it on your paint.

I liked this shot of the Fit wheel sitting next to the Rotas on Leslie. Had to throw it in.


The Sport package comes with a nice set of 16x7 inch, twin seven spoke, alloys. A beautiful wheel in my opinion. The tires mounted on said wheels are 205x55x16 Hankook Ventrus V2 Concepts. Same type of tires that I had on Helena. The larger sidewall helps soak up the bumps yet, still provide ample response and grip in the wet and dry. Not that you can really worry about grip with 110lb/fts out of the 1.5L in her but, I digress. You can throw this little car around pretty well with these.


Still says Hankook on the tires. These things are practically new!

Purple Power De-Ruster works like a champ for your rusty projects.
These Neuspeed race springs need some love. These came off a car that was from Florida originally. So, the elements have eaten off that factory yellow coating a bit. I rubbed the up with the wire brush for a while.
Brush on the de-ruster and let it work. You will see it fizzle for a little while. After a bit it turns in to a black paintable surface.

E170 - 2014 Corolla LE, Oil and Cabin Filter Change

My buddy David asked me if we could change his oil, cabin filter, and clean up his daily driven Toyota Corolla. That way he could be corollin in a better fashion.

The Oil Change

Precursor Notes:
Toyota specifies 0w-20 or 5w-20 depending on conditions. We went with a 5w-20 since we are in the heat of summer right now.

So this car has an oil filter cap that is located on the underside of the car. Just behind the oil pan, on the passenger side of the motor. It is an odd looking thing that requires a special socket to get it off properly. It also has a cartridge style oil filter. Similar to zee Germans.

David always had this car serviced at the dealership for the first 100k. I'm not sure if they put it on extra tight of what but, it was a massive pain to get off. We originally got a 65/67mm Penzoil Oil Filter Removal Socket. However, it was too shallow and would not …

DB7 - Removal of stock bushings, Installing poly bushings

Things to note:
This is part 3 of this particular write up. Please see, part 1 and 2 for further details and to get caught up to this point.

Please note before you start this project, to remove the upper and lower ball joints you will need a very large C-Clamp that can be rented from the auto parts or a press. There is also a specific socket adapter kit you must also rent in order to use that C-Clamp method. Honda's have interesting front control arms that won't allow you to push that ball joint out with out. In my case, I have a 4 point 66mm impact socket that worked just fine. If not, I would have needed to rent the secondary kit that comes with the extra adapters.

The scope of this project was to replace:
Lower control arm bushings.
Lower shock mount bushings.
Tie rod ends.
Lower ball joints.
Upper ball joints.
Sway bar end links.
Upper, inner, A-arm bushings.
